*This tutorial is for people who bought the responsive One-Click Family Reunion Website and are ready to personalize it with their own information. If you want to build your own website from scratch instead, there’s a great free tutorial on making your own website. Check it out over on Art Resourcery.
You’re welcome to copy my sample images and text into your own site, even if you don’t buy my premade One-Click Family Reunion Website. If you do use my content, I’d love to see it! Feel free to paste a link in the comments below the post.
CLAIM YOUR FAMILY REUNION WEBSITE
Within 24-48 hours after you order your website, you’ll get a link (both in your email and through your Etsy account) from me.
1. Log into your email at gmail.com
2. Look for my email. You can type House Elves Anonymous into your search if you don’t see it right away. In the email, there’s a link to claim your site. Click the link and it’s all yours!
NOW YOU CAN MAKE THE WEBSITE YOURS
When you click the link to accept your website, it takes you to your website. From there, you can make any changes you want very easily.
Edit the Contact Us page.
Let’s start with the Contact Us page. We want to replace all the generic info with the real contact info for your family reunion. If you don’t know everything now, that’s okay. You can come back and update this later.
TO ADD A MAP
To add a map to your reunion event, click INSERT (on the right), and scroll down to click MAP. Type in your address, and push the SELECT button. That’s it. Your map has appeared on the page.
TO DELETE A MAP
Click on the map and push the trashcan icon.
TO CHANGE THE BACKGROUND COLOR OF ANY AREA
Just click the section where you want to change the color, click the icon of the painter’s palette, and click the color you want. You can choose from the colors of the website, or upload a background image of your own.
Click it, then click the pencil icon. You have two different options for collecting replies.
FOR RSVP BY EMAIL
Where you see mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org, replace the “email@example.com” part with your actual email. Make sure to keep the “mailto:” with no space between that and your email.
FOR RSVP ON FACEBOOK
You can also delete mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org and paste in the link to your family reunion event on Facebook (this is a great way to organize everybody so you don’t have to keep track of your emails). People can reply all in one place, and post updates to the group. If you don’t know how to create a Facebook event, click here for instructions.
CONTACT INFO AND EVENT TIMES
This is one of the most important parts. Click the section you want to change, and replace the sample text with your own.
WHILE YOU’RE DOING CONTACT INFO, EDIT THE FOOTER THAT APPEARS ON EVERY PAGE
Click the bottom section of the webpage, click EDIT FOOTER. Replace this part with your own contact info
[Family Reunion Date and Address] [Contact person’s phone number] [Contact person’s email]
TO DELETE A SECTION
You can delete any section you don’t want by clicking on it, then pushing the trashcan icon.
TO ADD A SECTION
You can add as many sections as you want. Just click INSERT, and choose the type of section you want. You can include text, videos, Google forms you create in Google Drive, calendars, and more!
TO CHECK RESPONSIVENESS
There are little computer and cell phone icons at the top that you can click to preview how this will look on different size screens.
IMPORTANT: ALWAYS SAVE YOUR CHANGES
When you have everything the way you want it, click PUBLISH to save your work, before navigating to a different page.
FINISHING UP THE CONTACT PAGE
When you have everything the way you want it on this page, click the blue PUBLISH button.
Review your changes, and confirm that you want to save them by clicking PUBLISH again. You’ll be shown the current version on the right, and the updates you just made (with a green box around the recent changes) on the left.
Edit the Reunion Photos Page.
Click where it says Reunion Photos at the top of your website to navigate to that page.
If you want to upload some family photos here to get the site looking more personal, you can. You can also leave it blank for now.
TO EDIT THE HORIZONTAL PHOTO SLIDESHOW
Click on it and click the gear icon to edit the carousel. From the window that pops up, you can hover over and delete any image you don’t want, or click the plus sign to add new photos. Click UPDATE when you’re done.
TO UPDATE THE “Upload your pictures to our family Facebook Group!” BUTTON
Click it, and paste in the link to your family’s Facebook Group, then click UPDATE.
TO CREATE A FACEBOOK GROUP
- Click the in the top right of Facebook and select Group.
- Enter your group name, choose the privacy option, and then add family members to your group.
- Click Create.
Lower on the page put your email in where it says [email].
EDIT THE WHERE TO STAY PAGE
Click on Where To Stay at the top of your site to navigate to that page.
I’ve already done most of the work here for you.
The Airbnb section is ready to use without you doing anything to it.
Just scroll down to the Hotels & Motels section, click it and add in links to some nearby places that you feel comfortable recommending.
I’ve included a Stay With Family section.
You can choose to replace this info with the real info or delete this section completely.
EDIT THE HOME/FAMILY REUNION INFO PAGE
Click on Family Reunion Info at the top of your site to navigate to that page.
Set up the RSVP button as we did on the contact page earlier. (Just scroll up to the gray box if you don’t remember how to edit the button.)
I’ve included extra pre-written content on the home page to give you inspiration. You can use what I wrote, and just replace the names and contact info with real info. Or, you can write your own text and delete mine. It’s completely up to you. You can also delete any sections that don’t fit your plans, and you can add as many new sections as you want.
In the intro section, replace “Smiths” and “Smith” with your family name:
“Every year, Smiths from around the country come together to mingle and celebrate. If you’re a Smith, we’d love to have you at the next family reunion. It’s a potluck & get-together extravaganza! Join us!”
Family History Projects
In the intro section, replace “Smith” with your family name, and put in your name or the name and contact info of someone in your family who wants to be in charge of family projects:
“At each family reunion, we like to create some kind of special family heirloom for everyone to have so we can all take part in creating the next chapter of Smith Family History. Here are some of the ways you can participate! If you have ideas for more family collaborations, contact ________________!“
I created this section as a ready-to-go piece. You don’t need to do anything. Just remember to bring a box to the reunion, where people can put their recipe cards. Tape a note to it that says “Family Recipes – Put your recipes here!”
Genealogy / Family Tree Project
Replace “Linda” with the name of a real person, and change this text as needed.
“Linda is working on documenting our family history and creating a gigantic family tree. She’ll be posting info here about how to share your family tree information, so please check back soon!”
FAMILY SIGN-IN / SIGNATURE BOARD
In the intro section, replace “Smiths” and “Smith” with your family name:
This year, we will have a GIGANTIC family tree for all the Smiths to sign! Make sure to be ready with your best signature, so you can become a part of this beautiful Smith Family Heirloom!
REMEMBER TO GET A REUNION SIGNATURE POSTER BEFORE YOUR FAMILY REUNION
Get a blank family tree poster similar to this one on Etsy as a digital download, and print it at a local print shop!
Or, order the fancy one in this picture as a physical giclee print.
*You can clip this poster to any flat surface, and put it on a table or on a painter’s easel for people to sign. Remember to have pens available!
When the page looks the way you want…
And that’s it. You’re all done!
REMEMBER TO SHARE A LINK TO THE SITE WITH ALL OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS ALONG WITH THEIR INVITATION TO THE FAMILY REUNION.
You can also post a link to the site in your family’s Facebook Group, and on the Family’s Facebook Event page.
If you have a family newsletter or are using email invitations to let people know about the reunion, remember to include a link to the website there, too!
Here are some additional things you can do to get the most out of your site:
- Add, delete & organize pages (To add additional pages, click PAGES > +. Putting this together is shockingly simple, isn’t it?)
- Add or edit text & images
- Add Google files, video & more
Have a wonderful family reunion!
